BASED ON TRUE EVENTS.
The deadliest school massacre in U.S. history, its victims in grade school. A terrorist attack on U.S. soil. Three separate, coordinated bombings, culminating in a suicide car bomb that killed a public official and sent shrapnel into the crowd. This isn't fantasy. It all really happened... in rural Michigan, in 1927.
This historical screenplay dissects the Bath school disaster. It explores the attacks' mysterious perpetrator, including the haunting final message he left for the police and the traumatic childhood that may have spurred his crimes. But the story also explores the myriad ways the attacks affected its victims, transformed a town, and reflected a moment of transition in American history.

I want my money back! What the crap kind of book is this??? It's like a really borrrrring screen play! I am so disappointed, the pace is so slow, the interaction between characters so flat. I really it. Do not buy this book! Get the other one, it's worth paying more because this thing is just ridiculous. I am guessing the positive reviews for this book were written by friends of the author or something. Only thing I like is the photos, the rest is garbage.Product details

Watching People Burn edition by Julian Darius Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Although this screenplay is based on an event that occurred almost ninety years ago, the story is relevant today. In the late 1920's, Andrew Kehoe, a depressed man with a history of a problem childhood, bombed a school in Bath, Michigan. Today, we read stories about bombings almost every day in every newspaper or see scenes of bombing aftermaths on the nightly news. However, most people probably do not give much thought to how these events affect the victims and the communities. In this screenplay, the reader experiences this and more. Because it is a screenplay, the story reads quickly, which only heightens the impact. The author also has shown the reader how such an event affects and changes the victims and the community. This compelling story is a must-read for anyone interested in today's events and understanding how they affect all of us. This was not an act of terrorism as understood today, but it parallels terrorist acts and events in most ways. I received this free from goodreads.
I received a copy of this book as part of a FirstReads giveaway on Goodreads.com.
This books is a screenplay written formatted into chapters. The first scene describes children in a rural Michigan town getting on the bus to school, a very normal thing. Then we read a description of the bomb going off in the school basement. I was hooked and could barely put the book down after that! The book includes photos from the Toledo Blade newspaper and Monty Ellsworth.
We go back in time and learn about the life and personal history of Andrew Kehoe, who will eventually cause the blast that will kill over forty people. Darius gives us "snapshots" of events in Kehoe's childhood his mother's death of TB, watching his stepmother burn to death in a kitchen accident and saving his nickels (early signs of his frugality). Time moves forward. We meet his wife, Ellen "Nellie" (Price) Kehoe. We see them moving into their farmhouse outside Bath, MI. Because the screenplay begins with the school bombing, the rest of the story has an overshadowing of foreboding. Each combined event offers clues to Kehoe's motivation.
The story is an interesting character study of Andrew Kehoe. He is frugal to a fault. He is good with his hands but worthless as a farmer. He's impulsive and inconsistent. He nurses a grudge against the school superintendent for years. He feels overburdened by the tax imposed to open the consolidated school in Bath. It could be a cautionary tale. (How suspicious should we be of our peculiar neighbors?) If Andrew Kehoe shows the darkness of humanity, then the people of Bath show the best. The townspeople pull together to rescue the children from the school, create a triage unit and support one another in the weeks after.
This novel is a screenplay and it's the responsibility of the reader to fill in details. To create a "movie" in their own minds. I found myself trying to choose actors for each character and creating a soundtrack in my mind! I believe this makes the story more powerful. It forces you to imagine scenes and details.
I feel that some of the dialogue is over simplified. Kehoe and his family state several times "I am frugal." and "I am thrifty." If this were a traditional novel I'd say the author is "telling" instead of "showing."
This is a compelling story that has relevance to the modern world.
I grew up outside of Bath Michigan and have always heard of the bombing of the school.I found the book very informative and the pictures gave me a different outlook,I always believed it was a one room school,I also went to the website and read the other book.
Prior to being made aware of the screenplay, I'd had never of the tragedy in Michigan. In today's world, it easy to believe that those we have to fear come from a foreign land with a foreign religion and are hell bent on destroying everything American, as they see us as the root of their problems. In some cases that's true, but not always. Andrew Kehoe was an American, and in the end believed destroying a school was the solution to his "problems".
Was he insane, misguided, or just pure evil? Could this have been prevented if only someone saw the signs? The author doesn't answer these questions, I'm glad he doesn't . The screenplay/book is not a case study of the mind of a mass murderer. It has brought to light a tragedy that few know about, during a time when America was thought to have been "innocent" of such extreme acts of violence. Sometimes, the terrorist is living next door.
I choose this book because I had never heard of this school disaster. Just to think that something like this happened so long ago. I would recommend this to anyone who wants to read about a USA school disaster
Read the description carefully before you buy. I screwed up and bought this. Instead of a history book about the tragedy its a "play?" about what happened. Very weird, and not what I was looking for.
This is one of the worst books I have read. It was too short. The format was very choppy and did not flow from one thought to another. It gave no real information and was more like a high school english assignment than a book. It did not seem as though the author did any real research, except go to the library and possibly look up old newspaper articles about this event. The internet would have been just as informative and interesting as this book.
It was a complete disappointment. The only good things about this book were the photographs that were included.
