The Valley of Vision A Book of Romance and Some HalfTold Tales Henry Van Dyke Books Reviews
This is an excellent collection of short stories by Henry Van Dyke, mostly based in France in WWI. The main exception is the last story about the boyhood of Jesus. Of course it's a made up story, because no one knows anything about that period of Christ's life, but Van Dyke does a great job with the idea, and he takes many of Christ's teachings and shows that their origins could have possibly come from his boyhood experiences.
My favorites in this collection are
A Remembered Dream
A Sanctuary of Trees (if you only read one of the stories, try this one)
The Broken Soldier and the Maid of France
These tales transport the reader to another time and place, and Van Dyke's writing is always great. There are gems scattered abroad here as in all his writings.
The best thing I can say about Van Dyke's writing is that it inspires me a lot personally. The themes of courage, manhood, overcoming evil with good, and just doing the right thing, abound in his work. It's never corny or forced, but seems to come from the pen of a man who lived these ideals and understood them well. I would personally like to see a revival of Van Dyke's writing in this generation.

I guess everyone who downloaded this was expecting the masterpiece Puritan prayers with the same name. What a bummer to open it up and find out its something completely different.
Well, as they say - if it seems like to good to be true - it probably isn't
This is a wonderful book of prayers with a depth that encourages further meditation.
Something should be said for having the genius to name you book with the same name as a collection prayers. He has probably sold more than he ever expected.
I thought I was ordering the classic "The Valley of Vision" - a book of wonderful Puritan prayers. Not so.
